[ENGLISH] Tomorrow I am off to Durban, South Africa, for a conference. I will be leaving my two beautiful boys and my husband behind. Tomorrow is a year since I started with Bell's Palsy. I am better, much better but I am not healed yet. I was feeling a bit down today and so I moved on and did some preparations for my trip. I bought a few things (new hiking boots! yay!), got a pedicure and went to have my eye brows threaded.I was feeling a bit miserable, my face does not work, my work sometimes takes a big toll on me and I am not that sure about leaving all my boys behind. I feel a bit bad about leaving R... he is only 8 months and he is so cute. It will only be 10 days but I am feeling bad nonetheless.
Two of the girls at the beauty salon were pregnant at the same time as me; our sons/daughters are only weeks apart. And so we started talking about the babies. They told me that their babies are in India with relatives, they are not a permanent residents in Australia and therefore they are not entitled to to any government help with childcare fees. Typical Sydney prices for childcare of under two year old babies range from $80 to $120 per day. Australian citizens and permanent residents get the childcare rebate which is 50% of the fees up to a certain amount; if you are in a low salary you can also get the child care benefit which brings the fees even lower. If you are on a temporal visa (for example, the 457 for sponsored workers) you get to pay taxes but get no benefits. These women work in Australia and pay their taxes and yet they cannot have their babies with them because they cannot afford sending them to childcare while they work.
Needless to say that I felt like a whinger. I cannot imagine having to send my boys away because I cannot afford to have them with me while I work! Can you imagine how the conditions are in their hometowns in India that they would rather stay here trying to get their permanent residency while their relatives rise their children? I ask them if they skype them all the time and they say they can't, they are in tears just as they see them, they get daily photos and videos but they don't want their children to see them sad and crying.
Well, my life is not perfect and I have a wonky face but I have a good job and a good husband and I have my boys with me. Life is good.
[ESPANiOL] Today I am writing with no tildes or enies, sorry! Tambien he salido a hacer unas compras y a mimarme un poco. Me he hecho una pedicura y tambien he ido a arreglarme las cejas.

R relaxes by sleeping in weird positions - R se relaja durmiendo todo retorcido |
[ENGLISH] Over the last 6 weeks I have been doing a
meditation course. The instructor has been taking us through different
meditation techniques. She said that some techniques work better for some
people so she would teach us a range and then we can practise those that are
better for us.
I like counting, I have spent my life counting stuff, cars
on my way to work, tiles in the bathroom, steps when I walk on the beach and
breaths when I go for a run. My father does it too, and no, he did not teach me
so it must be genetic. My mother was quite amused when she found out that I was
a “counter” like dad. It turns out that counting is meditating, you empty your
brain and go into relaxation, you can achieve deep relaxation by counting. It
was the first technique that we learnt and the one that has worked the best with
me.
I am a scientist. I can understand the reasons behind
relaxation through counting, you sort of empty your brain. I can understand how
you undertake relaxation techniques that “travel through your body”, it is
about awareness, focusing in what you are feeling through that part of the
body. My problems start when meditators speak like if it was some kind of
religion. My instructor even said that science has proven that we can change
our environment with our attitude; she insinuated that we can change the
climate. I cringe; this is the same people that would be outraged if their
children were taught creationism in school! (creationism, by the way, is absolutely ridiculous!) Don’t they realise that what they
are saying is as wrong? We can change our attitude and we can modify other
people’s attitudes to us but we cannot change our physical environment!
While I utterly enjoyed the meditation, I felt quite
uncomfortable with some of the stuff what was said in the classes. Even more
uncomfortable when the instructor was claiming that science had proven one
thing or the other. Well, if it hasn’t been peer-reviewed by reputable peers,
it is not science. And using Google and reading blogs is not scientific
research.
Relaxing at the beach - Relax en la playa |
A mí me
gusta contar.

Alive and busy – Viva y ocupada
[ENGLISH] Busy? Yes, very busy. R started crawling at 5.5
months and it certainly has not helped me find any time to sit down and write.
I have a few unfinished posts… so I am now trying to post shorter entries to see
if I can finish them. I should probably try to write in the tablet, does anyone
know of a good spell check for Android?
R |
G is going great at school: “Finally! Someone is going to
teach me how to read” he said after his teacher announced that they were to
learn.
Work is crazy. Way too many things to do and I am starting teaching
next week. I am getting things done but urgent things arise on a daily basis. I
miss the time I had in my hands when I used to sometimes procrastinate in the
internet… I hardly get time to even read all my e-mails some days!
Bell's Palsy is still here... 10 months and counting... in fact, quite close to 11 months since it started. I am still uncomfortable and quite self conscious about my smile or the fact that my left eye closes when I eat. I am doing facial retraining exercises. I found a physiotherapist from Sydney University whose line of research includes recovery from Bell's Palsy. She is incredibly supportive and her exercises seem to be working. She is also someone that truly understands what I have been going through... I always end up with tears in my eyes and she hugs me.
G and I on his first day of school, I like this photo, it is my good side - G y yo en su primer dia de cole, me gusta esta foto ya que es mi lado bueno |
R, my time pit, lots of fun, lots of time -- R, mucha diversion y mucho tiempo |
[SPANISH]
Ocupada?
He
G in his uniform - G con su uniforme |
Sigo bastante incómoda y me cuesta sonreír, me
cuesta física y psicológicamente, no me gusta mi sonrisa nueva, no me
reconozco.
me siento, y luego siempre me abraza.

8.5 months of Bell's Palsy (Paralisis de Bell)
I can close my eyes! - Puedo cerrar los ojos! |
A new year has started and 8.5 months have passed. I have now recovered some mobility and can talk pretty well. It get worse when I am tired and I definitely feel quite self-conscious when I am with someone that has not seen me in a while and I feel (or imagine) that they are analysing what is going on with my face… when the analysis is real, it is normally followed by an awkward comment such as “You can hardly tell anything about Bell’s Palsy anymore…” And yes, if I am not talking or moving is not too bad… but as soon as I talk or smile it becomes obvious. I do miss my smile greatly and I don’t know if I should hope that I will get it back one day. The video and photos in this post show the asymmetry of my face and how my left eye closes involuntarily at times and the corner or my mouth pulls up when I close my eye. These involuntary movements are synkinesis.
But now it closes all the time Pero ahora se cierra demasiado |
I also found an academic at the University of Sydney whose line of research specialises in recovery from facial paralysis. I went to see her a few weeks ago and she gave me some exercises to try to correct/minimise the synkinesis that I have developed. Here it is what I am supposed to do in front of a mirror a few times every day: (1) small smiles trying not to close the affected (left) eye; (2) pout slowly without closing the eye; and, (3) close both eyes softly without pulling up the left corner of my mouth. The hardest one is pouting without closing my eye. She also confirmed what I suspected: Yoga and Meditation are great for nerve recovery!

Welcome 2014 – Bienvenido 2014
[ENGLISH] I have been full-time mothering, this is why I
have been away. Lots of work before going on holidays and then lots of things
to do with the kids.
I am happy to see 2013 go. 2013 has been hard, really hard. I
have seen people very close to me battle with depression and not always win. But
I guess that the important thing is that they have been trying to get out and
are in the path of recovery. My face went all wonky in April and has not
recovered yet (I am yet to post the update on my Bell’s Palsy). And I also had a
cancer scare with my mother. Lots of other ugly things happened to my good
friends: one was in hospital with Purpura and another in hospital with cancer,
another lost his mother, another did not get her permanent position, and my
cousin divorced in a rather ugly way… and so on…
My normal year ended in April as I have been unable to
function normally afterwards. My face was painful and debilitating and as a
result I took 1 month of sick leave. Thankfully my pregnancy went well and R was born on the 29th of July. And what a delight that has been! R is
the sweetest and loveliest and cuddliest little boy. He is kind and gentle and
has compensated everything else. What would have been a horrible year to forget
has become a year to remember. Seeing my two kids grow and interact and play with
their father has been what has kept me going this year.
I hope that 2014 is better, I want health and happiness and
rest… and peace of mind… but I am starting to think that this is what growing
up is about. Maybe this is what grown-ups were warning me when I wanted to grow
up faster.
Happy new year to every one! May 2014 be great for all of us
<3 <3 <3
[ESPAÑOL]
He estado ocupada.
Me
alegro de que se acabe el 2013. Ha sido un año súper duro. He visto como gente
Demasiadas cosas feas e infelices ocurrieron a
