I am working in the field here/ Yo trabajando en el campo |
[ENGLISH] It has been a few years now since I started to be
involved in the Women in Science programme in my Faculty of Science. I have
learnt a lot. I have learnt about Equal Pay Day. We (women) normally accept the first offer they give us without
negotiating while men normally negotiate until they get something better, that
results in women being a few steps below equally experienced men.
With some exceptions, women are majority in most science degrees and they are starting to be majority in postgraduate degrees as well.
Women postdocs may represent 50% of a traditionally male-dominated department
such as geosciences. However, when it comes to faculty members or tenure track
positions that percentage decreases until it reaches ridiculous proportions for
senior academic positions such as Professorships or Chairs. the graphic below shows a typical distribution.
I have discussed other causes with several of my female
colleagues in many occasions and (aside from many other reasons) my conclusion is that the system to secure
a continuing position was (unintentionally) designed for men to succeed. An
important part of any application process is to tell your potential department
colleagues what exciting things you are bringing to the department and how you
are going to achieve your exciting research plans. Typically, a female
applicant will have a detailed plan of what she is going to do in the next five
years while a male applicant will present a big-picture plan detailing research
for world domination. The male contestant will typically get the job. The
reality is that five years later the woman would have successfully completed
every point in her plan; the man would have done an excellent job (hopefully)
but his achievements would be closer to those outlined by the woman and it is
almost certain that he would not have conquered the world in five years.
So now... why don’t we (women) learn to present our big
ideas for world domination? And/or why do we all still fall for those amazing
presentations where someone (more often than not a male) promises to conquer the world of science in only 5 years?
N.B.: I haven't even mentioned motherhood...

He tenido
N.B.: Ni siquiera he mencionado la maternidad... Y mi experiencia se refiere, mayormente, a Australia.
