Darth Vader on a rainy day - Darth Vader en un día de lluvia

[ENGLISH] And it rained, and it rained and then, it rained some more. I really don’t know if it will be necessary to drive to the swimming pool for G’s swimming lesson tomorrow... it might be possible for him to swim in the driveway! 

G has been going to childcare since he was 5 months old, he started 2 days a week and then increased slowly until starting 5 days a week when he was 3 years old. I think that it has been good for him; I am a scientist and I really lovemy job and don’t want to give it up (I would go mental). B jokes about becoming a house husband or stay at home dad, but I know that it wouldn’t work either (he would spend more time surfing than cleaning). Finding childcare is hard, especially in the inner west (where I work) or in the eastern suburbs (where we live). I have our name down in 7 different childcare centres with the hope that one of them will offer me a spot by the end of the year. It is not cheap either; it is more than $100 per day of which you get 50% back from the government up to a maximum of some $7,500 (childcare rebate). How can a working mother plan her return to work with no guarantee of having childcare? We have been talking about it in our Women in Science group but cannot come up with a solution.

On the second day of big rain today it was activities day with G, we downloaded some join-the-dots from Lego, a Spiderman and a great Darth Vader paper figurine... G did the join the dots, B started the Spiderman but then realised that we needed some thicker paper and I did the Darth Vader... team effort!

 

[ESPAÑOL] Y llovió, y llovió y llovió, y cuando parecía que no podía llover más, siguió lloviendo. La única ventaja es que igual mañana no tenemos que ir a la piscina para la clase de natación de G, igual puede nadar en la entrada del garaje!

G lleva yendo a la guardería desde los 5 meses, empezó 2 días por semana y fuimos incrementando poco a poco hasta llegar a los 5 días a la semana a los 3 años. Creo que le ha venido muy bien, además, como científica a mí me encanta mi trabajo y no quiero dejarlo (me volvería loca). B dice medio de broma que se va a hacer amo de casa, pero creo que tampoco funcionaria (iba a pasar más tiempo surfeando que limpiando). Encontrar guarderíaes difícil, especialmente en el inner west, donde trabajo, o en los eastern suburbs, donde vivimos. Para Secundino nos hemos apuntado en 7 centros diferentes con la esperanza de que alguno nos confirme plaza antes de final de año. Y tampoco es barato; mas de $100 por día de los cuales el gobierno te devuelve la mitad hasta un máximo de unos $7,500 (childcare rebate). Planear la vuelta al trabajo después de la baja es casi imposible para las madres trabajadoras! Este es uno de los temas recurrentes en el grupo de Mujeres en Ciencia pero no damos encontrado una solución.

Hoy ha sido el segundo día de chaparrones continuos y hemos hecho actividades con G, nos bajamos de internet unos dibujos de unir puntos de Lego, y unas figuras de papel de Spiderman y Darth Vader . G hizo los dibujos, B comenzó el Spiderman pero se dio cuenta de que iba a necesitar cartulina que no tenemos, y yo me curré el Darth Vader… trabajo de equipo!
